Scienta Omicron Newsletter 04-2024
Nobel Prize Technologies Supporting Science and Industry

Message from Henrik Bergersen, Chief Operating Officer (COO)

With vacation periods mostly concluded in our factories, we are now preparing for an intense delivery schedule for the rest of the year. We are especially happy to see that the demand for our scanning probe microscopy (SPM) systems is at a record level, demonstrating that our new range of SPMs keep pushing the frontier in surface science.

Between the uptake in SPM and our continued high levels of electron spectroscopy and deposition systems delivery, our production teams are working intensively to make sure that all systems and instruments will reach their customers on time.

Looking ahead we are excited about our upcoming new product releases. In the MBE field we now offer better solutions for oxides. Our work horse analyzer in ARPES, the DA30 will soon have successor that will revolutionize speed and accuracy in ARPES research. Stay tuned for this and more during the Fall 2021.

Yours sincerely,

Scienta Omicron Team

Successful Installation

EVO-Compact MBE at Clemson University´s Laboratory for Band-engineered Quantum Systems (LaBEQ), USA

Scienta Omicron is thrilled to announce the successful installation of its first EVO-Compact Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) system at Clemson University’s Laboratory for Band-engineered Quantum Systems (LaBEQ), USA. Dr. Kasra Sardashti, a professor at the University, is the first customer of our new EVO-Compact system. The research to be carried out in this instrument will be focused on band structure engineering at superconducting/normal material (e.g. semiconductor, metal, ferromagnet) interfaces. This work is expected to play a key role in the development of hybrid classical–quantum processors and sensors.

The new EVO-Compact offers the flexibility of a small deposition system and the ability to realise the full complement of MBE capabilities. The system can be fitted with either small flag style sample holders or up to 2” wafers, it has a double-walled LN2 cryopanel, options for up to 5 conventional MBE sources, and a multipocket e-beam evaporator. Furthermore, the deposition chamber offers ports for RHEED, beam flux monitoring, quartz crystal microbalance, and pyrometry. The EVO-Compact has been specifically designed to fit the needs of researchers working on novel material systems, such as TMDC’s, TI’s, and other complex hetero-epitaxy applications involving low vapour pressure or rare-earth elements.

Energy Funnelling within Multichromophore Architectures Monitored with Subnanometre Resolution

In this work, Guillaume Schull, Fabrice Scheurer et al. have used luminescence induced by scanning tunnelling microscopy to probe model multichromophoric structures assembled on a surface. Mimicking strategies developed by photosynthetic systems, individual molecules were used as ancillary, passive or blocking elements to promote and direct resonant energy transfer between distant donor and acceptor units. As it relies on organic chromophores as the elementary components, this approach constitutes a powerful model to address fundamental physical processes at play in natural light-harvesting complexes. The STM data were acquired with a LT STM (4.5 K) Scienta Omicron set-up that operated in an ultrahigh vacuum, and was configured to detect the light emitted at the tip–sample junction.

Cluster System

Connection of ARPES Lab and VT STM using Linear Transfer Line (LTL)

Pre-existing cluster systems are easily extended with an ARPES Lab, using a Scienta Omicron Linear Transfer Line (LTL) or a Radial Distribution Chamber (RDC) for in UHV connection. This specific ARPES Lab is equipped with a DA30-L and Ferrum VLEED detector for spin resolved measurements. The ARPES Lab is tested by our test engineers Amy Qu and Pascal Nigge. The LTL will connect the ARPES Lab and a VT STM to an existing cluster system and extend the analytical capabilities at the research lab. The UHV connection allows fast iterations of sample preparation and analysis.

Product News

POLAR SPM Lab: Low Temperature SPM with Unsurpassed Hold Time

Many of today’s Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) applications require extremely low noise for detection of very small (<500 fA) tunneling currents (e.g. STS or molecular imaging). In the Scienta Omicron POLAR SPM Lab, ex-situ signal amplifiers for both Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and QPlus® Atomic Force Microscopy (QPlus® AFM), combined with dedicated wiring, result in maximum experimental flexibility and the highest achievable signal to noise ratio.

XPS Lab: Versatile Electron Spectroscopy Platform

The Scienta Omicron XPS Lab has been designed to combine outstanding quantitative XPS performance and ease of operation with a modular sample handling concept. The exceptional value of the XPS Lab is based on the high-transmission and high-speed Argus CU hemispherical analyser.

Service Upgrade

High Uptime Kit VT STM and LT STM

Having spare parts and consumables available in your lab is a great way of minimising downtime for your SPM instruments. To help support your research we have created the High Uptime Kits for our popular VT STM XA and LT STM instruments. These packages include the common consumables and spare parts needed to keep your experiments running in the event of a worn out part or misplaced component.

The High Uptime Kits come in VT STM XA and LT STM variations.

New Chief Product Officer (CPO)

Axel von Sydow

We welcome our new Chief Product Officer (CPO) Axel Von Sydow. Axel brings 15 years of product management experience from high-tech equipment suppliers with him. He has most recently spent 7 years as Sr. Product Manager at ASML in the Netherlands, where he among other tasks was product responsible for their flagship immersion scanner - the NXT:2050i - from start of development, through product launch and market introduction. This scanner today represents a significant portion of ASML’s multi-billion euro revenue.

In his CPO role, Axel will be responsible for the combined Scienta Scientific group product offering and for identifying new business growth opportunities.
